We want to see people in the construction and heavy civil industries thrive.
People drive BuildWitt. Since our team is everything to our business, it’s our priority to care for them from day one.
A "3X Person" is a human living up to one's full potential. They understand their unique gifts and talents, work hard to develop their skills, are authentic, accept their flaws, deeply care for others, support their communities, and drive our mission and culture.
We believe a 3X Person can create the value of three ordinary people, hence the “3X.” If we build an organization of 3X People, we can serve our customers better, pay our people more, and further our mission faster. Not only is BuildWitt better off, but 3X People serve as better parents, spouses, and community members.
"Develop" is key — while our hiring team recruits for 3X potential, it's everyone's responsibility, regardless of title, to Develop 3X People. Our ultimate goal is for everyone at BuildWitt to be a 3X Person or on the path to becoming one.
Developing 3X People starts with you. Ask questions, seek discomfort, make mistakes, reflect, have hard conversations, read books, ask for coaching, and do the work. You can only be a 3X Person if you're striving to be one.
Develop those around you. Look for natural gifts and abilities in others and guide them to realize their potential. Walk the fine line of helping them develop while allowing them to develop themselves. Sometimes, this means allowing them to fail or struggle.
Our work is vital, our days are sometimes stressful, and we often serve serious companies.
There’s much at stake, but sometimes we need a reminder not to take ourselves too seriously, grab hold of self-deprecating humor, or make a dad joke.
Lighten Up isn’t all jokes. Maybe it’s a deep breath, an afternoon off, or a personal conversation with someone on the team. Living this value can also mean literally lightening up someone’s work or emotional load when they’re struggling.
Lighten Up is an overall approach to our work. Allow for flexibility, find humor in things going wrong, and carry a positive attitude.
We trust and expect you to Make Decisions.
We trust you day one — there is no “trust, but verify” at BuildWitt.
We move fast and can't afford to run every decision up the ladder. Those closest to the decision have the authority to act.
Do What's Right, consult others if necessary, and make the call.
What if you make the wrong decision? Failure is OK!
The outcomes of your decisions are your responsibility (Extreme Ownership). If you make the wrong call, take ownership, reassess, and adjust to make things right.
Don't confuse Make Decisions with a license to do whatever you want. We've created reasonable bounds to grow our culture thoughtfully as our business expands (for example, our values). You have total freedom within the bounds, but don't exceed them.
Give those you lead the freedom to Make Decisions. While tempting to Make Decisions for less-experienced team members when you know best, let them learn.
Care for and love the humans of BuildWitt, the Dirt World, and your communities.
Praise, appreciate, and celebrate others.
Hold people accountable and have tough conversations.
Be there for others when life’s rough.
Learn about those around you through personal conversation.
If you see someone in need, lend a hand.
Transparent and challenging conversations are unnatural. As humans, we tell people what they want to hear to avoid discomfort. Unfortunately, this eventually creates greater discomfort. The only way to break the cycle is through transparency.
Offer people transparent feedback as frequently as you can. Anyone at BuildWitt is fair game. Approach them with respect and avoid personal criticism. If you're the one receiving the feedback, understand that it's well-intended and take it to heart.
Other applications for Transparency Wins:
The Dirt World is simple — it's dirt, diesel, and concrete. However, don't confuse simple with stupid. Blue-collar people are brilliant and creative.
KISS is a reminder to speak the language of the Dirt World. We keep our messaging, products, and storytelling simple.
The term "stupid" is deliberate. It's a nod to the language of the Dirt World. Jokes, friendly insults, and nicknames are commonplace.
Whenever you’re working on something, whether it's an email or an entirely new product, apply KISS. Simplicity is a skill and daily practice.
Not only is KISS necessary for serving the Dirt World, but it's good business. Time is valuable, and speed is crucial. By practicing KISS, you're respecting resources and streamlining our business.
First, Be the Example speaks to our mindset on safety. When we're in the field, we set the standard. We abide by all site-specific standards, and if necessary, we raise the bar.
BuildWitt has a high profile. How we act, what we post on social media, and how we treat others always matters. What we DO, not what we say, is what counts. As we grow our business, new team members will watch you to determine what actions align with our culture.
Details matter, and discipline is key. Small, everyday actions like keeping our office clean, being on time, and respecting rental cars add to enormous change.
You're always an example for someone, whether at the office, in the field, or at home.
Be the Example is most important when no one's watching.
This value also applies to how we’re building our company. BuildWitt intends to Be the Example for other businesses to follow in how we treat our people and operate overall.
The people of the Dirt World are the protagonists of our story.
We’re the stagehands, toiling behind the scenes to make them look amazing.
Humility is vital to our success. The Dirt World may struggle without us, but we’d be nothing without the Dirt World.
